(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is reportedly becoming increasingly concerned for his safety as the conflict between Moscow and Kiev escalates. According to a recent profile by Reuters, Zelensky has developed a heightened sense of paranoia regarding potential Russian assassination attempts aimed at him and efforts to destabilize Ukraine's leadership. A senior European official noted that his fears are well-founded given the current geopolitical climate.
In compiling their report, Reuters spoke with eight current and former Ukrainian and foreign officials, as well as several friends and colleagues from Zelensky’s past. These discussions reveal a leader who has evolved significantly since his election in 2019, displaying greater toughness and decisiveness while becoming less tolerant of mistakes. This transformation is attributed to the constant stress and fatigue he faces in his role as president during a time of war.
Zelensky's term officially expired in May, yet he has opted not to hold new elections, citing the ongoing martial law imposed due to the conflict. He has frequently alleged that Moscow has attempted to assassinate him, although he has not provided specific details or evidence to substantiate these claims. In May, Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) detained two colonels responsible for protecting high-ranking officials, suspecting them of being recruited by Russia to carry out an assassination plot against Zelensky.
Russian officials have consistently denied these allegations, with Dmitry Polyansky, Russia's deputy ambassador to the United Nations, stating earlier this year that there are “no such plans” to target Zelensky.
As the conflict continues to shape the political landscape in Ukraine, Zelensky's increasing paranoia reflects the immense pressure and risks faced by leaders in wartime, raising questions about the future stability of the country and its governance.
