Media reports Macron accusing Israeli representative of election middling

(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel macron reportedly voiced strong objections to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding what he described as "unacceptable" interference in France's recent elections by an Israeli minister, as per a report from Axios.

According to the report, Israeli Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli expressed support for Marine Le Pen's National Rally party just days before France's parliamentary elections. Chikli's remarks, where he asserted that it would benefit Israel if Le Pen were elected president of France, sparked controversy. He also indicated that his views aligned with Netanyahu's stance on the matter.

Following Chikli's statements, Macron personally called Netanyahu to convey his concerns. Axios journalist Barak Ravid claimed that Macron labeled the minister's comments as election interference, emphasizing the gravity of such statements during a crucial electoral period. Netanyahu assured Macron that he had instructed all ministers to refrain from commenting on the French election, Axios reported.

While the French government has not officially confirmed the call, Chikli continued to express his views on French politics even after Macron's intervention. In a subsequent interview, he criticized Macron's approach to the Jewish community, further complicating the diplomatic fallout from his initial remarks.

Both Netanyahu's office and the French embassy in Israel declined to comment on the reported conversation between Macron and Netanyahu, highlighting the sensitivity of the issue. The incident underscores the challenges posed by international comments on domestic electoral processes and the implications for diplomatic relations between nations.
