Finnish Prime Minister Lands in China for Xi Talks

(MENAFN) Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo touched down in China Sunday, launching a four-day diplomatic mission that will include critical meetings with top Chinese leadership, a state-operated confirmed.

Chinese government representatives greeted Orpo upon arrival at Beijing International Airport, marking the commencement of talks expected to address bilateral economic and strategic cooperation.

The Finnish leader's itinerary includes face-to-face discussions with President Xi Jinping, alongside separate negotiations with Premier Li Qiang and senior Chinese legislative figure Zhao Leji, signaling the visit's significance for both nations.

Finland forged formal diplomatic relations with Beijing during the early 1950s, establishing one of the longest-standing Western partnerships with the Chinese government.

Bilateral commerce between the two countries exceeded $8 billion throughout 2025, while cumulative two-way investment has surpassed $23 billion, according to media.

The visit unfolds as Finland navigates complex geopolitical dynamics, balancing its NATO membership and Western alliances with economic interests in China's massive market. Orpo's engagement with Beijing's highest-ranking officials suggests both sides view the relationship as strategically valuable despite broader tensions between China and Western democracies.
