Orban unveils Zelensky`s response to ceasefire suggestion

(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban revealed that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky showed reluctance towards Budapest's suggestion for a temporary ceasefire with Russia during Orban's recent visit to Kiev. Orban, making his first trip to Ukraine in over a decade, proposed the ceasefire as a means to accelerate negotiations and reduce casualties on the front lines.

Prior to his visit, Orban emphasized the urgency of establishing peace, citing the escalating toll on soldiers and the impracticality of resolving the conflict through military means alone. However, following discussions with Zelensky, Orban disclosed to Swiss news outlet Die Weltwoche that the Ukrainian leader harbored reservations about the ceasefire proposal. Zelensky reportedly cited past negative experiences with ceasefires and expressed skepticism about their efficacy for Ukraine's interests.

Although Zelensky himself has yet to comment on Hungary's proposal, his deputy chief of staff, Igor Zhovka, affirmed Ukraine's disinterest in the ceasefire suggestion, asserting that any ceasefire must be considered within a broader negotiation framework. The exchange underscores ongoing complexities in international efforts to mediate the Ukraine crisis amid divergent perspectives on viable pathways to peace.
