Death rate from terrorist attack in Russia's Caucasian surges to 21
(MENAFN) The death toll from a recent terrorist attack in Russia's Caucasian region of Dagestan has risen to 21, following the death of another policeman in the hospital on Monday night, according to the Ministry of Health. The attack, which targeted multiple locations including Orthodox churches, synagogues, and a traffic police post in the cities of Derbent and Makhachkala, resulted in the deaths of 16 policemen and five civilians, including a priest.
The Russian Guard Corps reported that one of its servicemen, Ramazan Atziev, was among those killed. Atziev was one of the first responders to the scene of the attack near the Holy Dormition Cathedral in Makhachkala. According to the Russian Guard's statement, Atziev quickly took up a firing position and, alongside his comrades, attempted to neutralize the assailants before the arrival of the special forces. Unfortunately, Atziev sustained a fatal wound during the shootout.
In addition to the fatalities, four more staff members were injured in the clash and are currently receiving necessary medical care. The attack, which has shocked the region, underscores the ongoing security challenges in Dagestan and the broader Caucasus area.
The coordinated nature of the assaults on both religious and law enforcement targets highlights the severity of the threat posed by terrorist groups operating in the region. Authorities are expected to intensify security measures and conduct thorough investigations to prevent further incidents and bring the perpetrators to justice.
