New Health Initiative Bans E-Cigarettes, Vapes, And Nicotine Pouches

(MENAFN- Tribal News Network) Under the ''Live Well' Initiative of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa health Department, the Peshawar district administration has completely banned electronic cigarettes, vapes, and nicotine pouches. This decision, enforced under Section 144, aims to curb the spread of respiratory diseases linked to these products.

The official statement highlights the health risks associated with e-cigarettes, vapes, and nicotine pouches, particularly their potential to cause respiratory illnesses. Consequently, the sale of these products is now entirely prohibited in the vicinity of hospitals and educational institutions. Additionally, sales to individuals under 21 and advertisements in public places and on vehicles are also banned. Violators of these regulations will face legal action.

Liaqat Yousafzai, the central chairman of the Tobacco Growth Association of Pakistan, expressed support for the Peshawar administration's decision, emphasizing that it should be applied to all electronic narcotics, he clarified that these bans do not pertain to traditional tobacco.

Muhammad Ajmal Shah, Project Coordinator for Tobacco Control at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Department, noted that similar bans on electronic nicotine products were enacted in 2023. At that time, a task force comprising district administration, excise, and police officials was formed, achieving significant results through coordinated efforts.

Shah emphasized that the ban, previously implemented province-wide, will now be reinforced with separate working teams at the district level. These teams will target the sale of nicotine products in hostel premises of educational institutions and various markets, aiming to protect public health from the dangers of these items.

Shah suggested that awareness campaigns should be conducted in educational institutions to safeguard students and younger populations, with principals and relevant heads playing key roles. He believes that with a dedicated task force and rigorous operations, the province can see positive outcomes: "The only solution to effectively address this issue is to impose a permanent, province-wide ban on the use of electronic cigarettes, vapes, and nicotine pouches, ensuring our youth are protected from these harmful products."
