WASHINGTON, June 5 (KUNA) -- US Secretary Antony Blinken held a meeting with the United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres in Washington late Tuesday, in which they discussed the US proposal for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, the US State Department announced.
In a statement, the department mentioned that during the meeting, Secretary Blinken thanked the Secretary General for his public support for the proposed agreement to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza, secure the release of all prisoners and end the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The statement added that Blinken emphasized the importance of the UN Security Council calling for the implementation of this agreement without delay, noting that both aides affirmed the necessity of delivering humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza and supporting the UN efforts to provide assistance.
During the meeting, both sides also discussed the US' cooperation with the UN in supporting Ukraine's efforts toward peace.
They also discussed the conflict in Sudan and the importance of taking all measures to end the violence, protect civilians and increase humanitarian aid.
On Friday, the US President Joe Biden unveiled a new proposal for a ceasefire consisting of three phases, including a temporary six-week ceasefire that would turn into a permanent ceasefire and the start of the construction phase in Gaza.
