'Doraemon the Movie: Nobita’s Earth Symphony' Wins Opening Weekend in China
(MENAFN- The News International) Two foreign-made animation movies recently opened at the mainland China box office, and “Doraemon the Movie: Nobita’s Earth Symphony” emerged as the clear winner. The Japanese film secured the top spot, surpassing “The Garfield Movie,” although the comparison between the two was not entirely like-for-like.
According to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway, “Doraemon” earned an impressive $12.6 million (RMB 89.5 million) over the three days following its Friday release. In contrast, “Garfield” was released on Saturday and earned $8.2 million (RMB 58.3 million).
“Earth Symphony” is the 43rd film in the beloved Doraemon franchise and was initially released in Japan in March. Its global box office total now stands at $40.5 million. Both animated newcomers comfortably outperformed “The Last Frenzy,” a comedy action film that had held the top spot in China for the previous two weeks. The latter earned $4.5 million over the latest weekend, bringing its cumulative total to $106 million since its release on May 1.
In addition to “Doraemon,” another Chinese title, “Walk the Line,” is set to open on June 8. Its previews this weekend were promising, securing fourth place with a total of $3.3 million. Meanwhile, “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In,” a Hong Kong-produced crime actioner released on May 1, took fifth place, earning $3.1 million and reaching a cumulative total of $92.3 million.
Artisan Gateway reports that the aggregate national box office over the latest weekend amounted to $45.4 million, bringing the year-to-date running total to $3.09 billion. While May represented a period of stasis, it still showed improvement compared to April, with $415 million in revenue. Notably, Chinese language films dominated May’s top honors, with “The Last Frenzy,” “Twilight of the Warriors,” and “Formed Police Unit” leading the way. Among imports, Japanese animation “Spy x Family Code: White” performed exceptionally well, grossing $32.5 million. Hollywood’s top title in China for May was “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” which earned $27.1 million.
