ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The Head of School provides leadership and fosters excellence in research, teaching, professional activities and policy development within the school, within the university and within the community, both scholarly and general.

The Head of School is expected to develop and promote a shared vision for the future directions, goals and priorities of the School, which is aligned to the vision of Monash Malaysia, serving as Monash University's platform for scholarly activity in Southeast Asia. The Head of School will position the School's education and research activities to have a strong impact within Malaysia and ASEAN. They are responsible for developing and implementing the School's strategic and operational plans.

The Head of School reports to the President and Pro Vice-Chancellor of Monash University Malaysia and serves on the Faculty of Arts Executive Committee, overseen by the Dean of Arts.

THE SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

Monash Malaysia School of Arts and Social Sciences , established in May 2008, is a premier humanities and social science research and teaching institution in Malaysia. A place-based campus that is part of the global Monash Faculty of Arts , the School is part of the Monash Arts global intellectual community of over 300 researchers and educators, and operates in response to opportunities for education, research and engagement in the local context.

The School has a large number of Asia and Southeast Asia experts, and has built a reputation around its mission of excellence in research and education that incorporates a socially engaged and diverse Global South perspective on the challenges facing the world.

It is a research-intensive School, with research activity within the Monash Arts research strengths of Geopolitics, Development and Governance; Thriving Communities; the Monash Climate Change Communication Research Hub (Malaysia Node); the newly established Southeast Asian Centre for Digital Tech and Society; and a new cluster of research in migration and mobility. Working across these research clusters, the primary focus is on key cultural, social and political issues affecting Southeast Asia

The School offers degrees at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate level programs, with opportunities to specialise in media and communication, gender studies, film, television and screen studies, public relations, writing, and global studies; that also includes history, politics and international relations.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The right candidate brings personal standing for a professorial appointment in a relevant discipline that is commensurate with a world-leading research-intensive university. In addition, the right candidate will have high-level skills in collaboration to create a high performing and collegial School culture, and in strategic planning and management, communication and stakeholder engagement across a scaled, distributed and complex multinational environment. Some experience in scholarly engagement in Southeast Asia would be an advantage to this appointment.
