It has several other names, among the most used: zebra ribbons and thermal transfer foil. Thermal ribbon or dye tape is also used, and several other less common designations exist.

A ribbon is a flexible substance comprised of three layers. The initial layer is a supporting polymer with a thickness of up to 8 microns. The second layer comprises a dye with a specific composition and diverse colors.

The third layer includes a safeguarding silicone that inhibits excessive wear on the head. The tape's typical thickness measures between 12 to 15 microns. When subjected to temperature, the operational concept involves transferring and adhering the dye layer to the designated surface.
