Man receives gunshot in head, discovered dead inside barrel in Malibu

(MENAFN) A coroner has decided that a man whose nude body was discovered inside a barrel in Malibu, California, the previous week received a gunshot in the head.

The guy was named as 32-year-old Javonnta Marshann Murphy by the Los Angeles County coroner's office on Wednesday, although no cause of death was given at the time. According to the Los Angeles Times, the coroner's case file now states the cause of death as being shot to the head.

The facts surrounding Murphy's shooting and sealing within a barrel are still being investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office.

The 55-gallon (208-liter) black plastic barrel was discovered floating in a Malibu lagoon on July 30 and brought in by a maintenance worker on a kayak, although it was not immediately opened.

The barrel was opened on July 31 by a lifeguard at Malibu Lagoon State Beach, that collected it following it washed back into the lagoon, according to the Sheriff's Department.

The length of time the corpse had been in the drum was unknown.
