US Supreme Court blocks Bidens student loan pardon

(MENAFN) The United States Supreme Court prevented Leader Joe Biden’s attempts to scratch USD430 billion in student loan debt on Friday, ruling the White House did not have the power to one-sided pardon the educational debts of 26 million Americans under the Covid-19 contingency loan forgiveness program his attorneys had quoted.

The court ruled 6-3 in favor of six Republican-driven districts that charged the White House for surpassing its power in line with federal law with the debt forgiveness strategy it exposed in August. The votes were divided along conceptual lines with the three liberal judges disagreeing.

Writing for the majority, Chief Justice John Roberts refused the government’s allegations that the program was just a “modification” of the current Covid-19 emergency loan program and therefore sanctioned under a 2003 law permitting the education secretary to “waive or modify” student financial assistance throughout state emergencies.
