(MENAFN- Jordan Times) AMMAN - Minister of Agriculture Khalid Hneifat on Wednesday announced that Saudi Arabia has officially decided to lift the ban on Jordanian livestock exports and has opened the export platform for this purpose, according to a ministry statement.
Hneifat noted that he values the response and direct cooperation from the Saudi side, which has a“positive” impact on the local sheep industry. He stressed the ministry's readiness to assist Jordanian sheep breeders in this regard.
The decision to lift the ban on sheep exports came following a visit by Saudi Minister of Agriculture, Water and Environment, and a Saudi technical delegation to inspect the ministry's procedures regarding livestock safety after an outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) was discovered among cattle in the Al Dhuleil and Al Hallabat districts.
Jordan's produces about one million head of sheep intended for export, more than 500,000 of which are usually exported to Gulf countries. Saudi Arabia imports the largest proportion of this figure, according to a report by the Department of Statistics.
