Turkey urges northern Kosovo to return to discussions, peace

(MENAFN) Turkey urged all parties in northern Kosovo to return to discussion and peace late Monday.

"We are following the events in the north of Kosovo with concern. These events harm regional security and stability," as mentioned by a declaration from the nation`s Foreign Ministry.

"We call on all parties to avoid violence and not take actions that will escalate tensions," the declaration also noted.

"We appreciate the constructive role of the Kosovo Peace Corps (KFOR) in preventing the escalation of events," the ministry also stated.

"We are saddened to learn that some KFOR soldiers were slightly injured in the incidents," it also said.

"The only way to reduce tension and establish lasting peace and stability in the region is to make progress in the ongoing dialogue process," the declaration also included.

On Friday, rigidities among Belgrade and Pristina increased after police in Kosovo conflicted with domestic Serbs which were crowded in front of the civic building in an attempt to stop the recently chosen ethnic Albanian mayor from going into his office.
