Poland Calls on Zelensky to Address Volyn Massacre Responsibility

(MENAFN) According to Lukasz Jasina, a spokesman for the Polish Foreign Ministry, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky should assume greater responsibility for his nation's historical actions, particularly concerning the Volyn massacre. The Volyn massacre refers to the mass murder committed by Ukrainian nationalists against ethnic Poles during World War II. Jasina expressed his view in an interview with Poland's Onet online news media outlet, where he was asked about the possibility of Zelensky issuing an apology for the tragic event.

While acknowledging that the Ukrainian side has not yet taken this step, Jasina emphasized that President Zelensky should accept more responsibility for Ukraine's actions. The issue holds significant importance for Warsaw, and Jasina believes it should be addressed at the highest level. The Volyn massacre continues to cast a dark shadow over the bilateral relations between Poland and Ukraine, impeding progress on numerous joint initiatives.

In 2016, the Polish parliament officially recognized the Volyn Massacres as an act of genocide perpetrated by the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). This recognition further underscores the gravity and historical significance of the events. Jasina highlighted the undeniable nature of this fact, stating that it cannot be changed or overlooked. He also emphasized that it is crucial to address the issue openly and honestly, as avoiding discussions about such historical events does not provide a solution or allow for reconciliation.

The tragic legacy of the Volyn massacre remains a sensitive topic, impacting the relationship between Poland and Ukraine. By urging President Zelensky to assume greater responsibility, Jasina is calling for acknowledgment, dialogue, and a deeper understanding of history to foster healing and pave the way for improved relations between the two nations.
