Significance of Security Council, Russia's Role within it

(MENAFN) The Security Council is considered the most important part of the United Nations, consisting of five permanent and 10 non-permanent member countries. The permanent members include the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Russia, and France, with the presidency of the Security Council rotating among the 15 member countries for one month each. The Security Council has been given significant responsibilities for the effective functioning of the UN, and the five permanent members hold veto power over its resolutions, which are binding for all UN members.

For Russia, being one of the key countries in global politics, this is an important privilege. Moscow has used its veto power more than any other country since the establishment of the UN, highlighting its significance and influence within the Security Council. Russia once held the presidency of the Security Council in February 2022, during the early days of the Russia-Ukraine war.

In recent years, there has been a growing polarization among the five permanent member countries on various issues, resulting in a decline in the effectiveness of the UN. Russia and China generally share similar views on various issues, such as the Syrian war, while the US, UK, and France tend to take different positions.

The ongoing Ukraine-Russia war has intensified this polarization, with accusations of war crimes being leveled against Russia by Western countries. As a result, Russia's Security Council presidency became a global hot topic, with Ukraine expressing the strongest opposition to this move. Despite their request for Russia's expulsion from the Security Council, such a move is not possible.

While some Western countries, particularly Ukraine, viewed Russia's Security Council presidency as a symbolic blow to the UN, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy suggested that some international organizations, including the UN, needed to be reformed. Nevertheless, the Security Council remains an important body for global politics, and its effectiveness will depend on the cooperation and consensus among its member countries.
