Israeli President Hosts Negotiation Session Over Judicial Overhaul Crisis

(MENAFN) Israeli President Isaac Herzog hosted a negotiation session on Monday between the ruling coalition government and the opposition over the ongoing judicial overhaul crisis in the country. The discussion aimed to build a framework for the continuation of negotiations after the Jewish holiday of Passover, during which the parties will meet to discuss the essential issues with the aim of reaching agreements. The Israeli opposition was represented by former Prime Minister Yair Lapid, the head of Yesh Atid Party, and former Defense Minister Benny Gantz, the head of the National Unity alliance.

According to a statement from Herzog's office, the discussions lasted several hours and were conducted in a matter-of-fact, in-depth, and serious manner with a positive atmosphere. This negotiation session is a significant step towards resolving the crisis that has rocked the country for weeks.

Protests against the planned judicial reform continued for the 14th consecutive week on Saturday, with thousands of Israelis taking to the streets. The opposition views the judicial overhaul plans as an attempt to reduce the powers of the judicial authority in favor of the executive.

However, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insists that his judicial plans would enhance democracy and restore the balance between the legislative, executive, and judicial powers. Netanyahu's proposed judicial overhaul has been met with strong opposition from various groups, including the judiciary and civil society organizations.

On March 27, Netanyahu bowed to pressure and announced a temporary halt to the judicial overhaul plans. The negotiations hosted by Herzog are aimed at resolving the crisis and finding a way forward that satisfies both the ruling coalition government and the opposition. The outcome of these negotiations will have significant implications for the future of Israeli democracy and the balance of power between different branches of government.
