Turkish Foreign Ministry Condemns US Deal with Greek Cypriot Administration

(MENAFN) The Turkish Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Sunday condemning a recent deal between the US and the Greek Cypriot Administration (GCA) that is seen as "encouraging Greek Cypriot side’s armament." The agreement in question was signed between the National Guard of the State of New Jersey and the Ministry of Defense of the GCA, as part of the National Guard Bureau's State Partnership Program. The GCA was included in this program in October 2020.

Türkiye, as a motherland and guarantor, will never allow any harm to come to the Turkish Cypriots, the ministry stressed. Ankara will continue to take all necessary steps to ensure the security of the Turkish Cypriot people. The Turkish government also supports the statement made by the Foreign Ministry of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) on this issue.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry's statement further criticized the US for disrupting the balance on the island of Cyprus to the detriment of the Turkish Cypriots in 2022 by lifting the arms embargo on the GCA. The ministry argued that these steps are encouraging the Greek Cypriot side’s armament, which poses a threat to regional stability. The statement called on the US to reconsider this policy and contribute to a just, lasting, and sustainable settlement of the Cyprus issue.

The Turkish government's condemnation of the US-GCA deal reflects the ongoing tensions between Turkey and the US over their differing approaches to the Cyprus issue. The US has been supportive of the GCA's efforts to reunify the island, while Turkey has taken a more hardline stance in support of the Turkish Cypriots. The lifting of the arms embargo on the GCA has been a particularly contentious issue, as Turkey sees it as a threat to its security and that of the Turkish Cypriots.

The Turkish government's strong condemnation of the US-GCA deal highlights the need for a peaceful resolution to the Cyprus issue. The ongoing tensions between Turkey, the US, and the GCA have the potential to destabilize the region and pose a threat to regional security. A just and lasting settlement that takes into account the concerns of all parties involved is necessary to ensure peace and stability in the region.
