(MENAFN) A powerful tornado tore through Mississippi, leaving at least 25 people dead and dozens more injured. The tornado also caused significant damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure, leaving hundreds of people homeless and without power. One person was killed in Alabama as well.
The town of Rolling Fork in the Mississippi Delta was particularly hard hit, with entire blocks flattened and homes reduced to piles of rubble. Cars were flipped over and the town's water tower was toppled. Many residents took shelter in bathtubs and hallways during the storm, and later broke into a John Deere store to use as a triage center for the wounded.
Survivors of the tornado walked around dazed and in shock, searching for survivors and breaking through debris and fallen trees with chainsaws. Power lines were pinned under decades-old oaks, their roots torn from the ground.
Wonder Bolden, holding her granddaughter, Journey, outside the remnants of her mother's now-leveled mobile home in Rolling Fork, said, "There's nothing left. There's just the breeze that's running, going through - just nothing."
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency announced that the death toll had risen to 25 and that dozens of people were injured. Four people who were previously reported missing had been found.
Other parts of the Deep South were also affected by suspected twisters, with one man dying in Morgan County, Alabama. The sheriff's department there said that they were digging out from damage caused by the storm.
The tornado has left a path of destruction in its wake, and rescue efforts are ongoing to help survivors and provide aid to those affected by the disaster.
