Brasília – The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food Supply (MAPA) informed the Chinese government decided this Thursday (23) to lift the embargo on Brazilian beef. According to the Ministry, the decision was taken after a meeting between Minister Carlos Fávaro and China's Minister of General Administration of Customs, Yu Jianhua, in Beijing.

Imports from Brazil had been suspended since February after the confirmation of a case classified by the Brazilian government as“isolated and atypical” of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), also known as“mad cow disease.” The report came from a small farm in the municipality of Marabá, in the Northern Brazilian state of Pará.

“Since the discovery of the case, MAPA has been working with transparency and taking all the necessary measures following the international import protocol,” said the Ministry in a release.

“I am sure this is a step for Brazil to advance more and more with the accreditation of plants and opportunities for Brazilian livestock,” reckoned minister Carlos Fávaro, at the end of the meeting, in Beijing.
