EU targets to save around 12 percent energy within decade end

(MENAFN) By 2030, the EU should use at least 11.7 percent less energy, according to an agreement reached by representatives of the European Parliament and EU member states.

This was disclosed on Friday in Brussels by the Council of Member States. and a forecast from 2020 serves as the reference value.

However, the formal approval of the EU Parliament and the EU member states is still required before the new targets can go into effect.

The announcement states that each EU nation must contribute to the savings goals and specifies a formula to be used to determine national contributions.

The EU Commission can ask individual nations to contribute more if the sum of their national contributions falls short of the required 20.5 percent tolerance limit.

Jutta Paulus, a German MEP for the Green Party, tweeted that those who procrastinate get assigned homework. Paulus claims that the agreement will save enough energy to equal all of Spain's annual energy consumption.

Niels Fuglsang, the chief negotiator on behalf of the parliament, said that "real change to the benefit of the climate and to the detriment of (Russian President Vladimir) Putin was needed."
