São Paulo – Arab culture will be the theme of a festival at Butantã Shopping mall, in the city of São Paulo, over the next two weekends, March 3 to 5 and 10 to 12. The gastronomic and artistic events with Arab families living in Brazil aim to muster the richness of Arab culture with solidarity. The picture above is for illustrative purposes only.
The festival will feature 15 exhibitors with food, drinks, and crafts typical to Arab culture. About 70% of the points of sale will be reserved for exhibitors with refugee status, who will be entitled to part of the overall event revenue.
In the booths, visitors will find Syrian sweets and traditional recipes such as kibbeh, sfiha, tabbouleh, grape leaf rolls, hummus, saj leaf bread, shawarma, and falafel, among other delicacies. In addition to the cuisine, the festival will also have Arab clothing, accessories, and other items.
To disseminate knowledge about the customs of one of the oldest people in humanity, the festival will have musical performances and traditional dances, including belly dancing and dabke , considered one of the most important artistic expressions among Arabs, highlighting a presentation by international dancer Dana Farida, who won several awards at Egyptian festivals.
Other attractions will include henna tattoos and coffee grounds reading (tasseography).
Butantã Shopping Mall provided the event space for free. According to the mall's Marketing coordinator, Franklin Pedroso, the initiative combines entertainment, culture, and social impact.
The Arab festival will occur over the next two weekends, on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm. To enter, visitors just need to donate 1 kg of non-perishable food. The event has the support of the Emirati and Egyptian consulates in São Paulo.
