The fundraising campaign, which started at 5.30pm and continued live on Qatar TV, reached as much as QR168,015,836 by midnight. Donations poured in from all segments of the society, including Qataris and expatriates, business persons, various companies, different entities across the country and even many Qatari children donated considerable sums of money.
The donations included QR10mn by the General Directorate of Awqaf, QR1mn each from Ooredoo Qatar, Doha Bank and prominent Qatari businessman Hussein Alfardan and sons. Many people donated large amounts and several donors opted not to reveal their names.
Turkish Ambassador Dr Mustafa Goksu, who was hosted by Qatar TV, donated QR10,000, and highly appreciated the efforts of the people and government of Qatar for the quick and excellent support to help the quake victims. He stressed that the government of Turkiye has very tough challenges not just to cope with the immediate consequences of the disaster but also for rebuilding the damaged infrastructure to restore the normal life of the people in the affected areas.
Yet, he stressed that the Turkish government is highly experienced and equipped to tackle such situations with the help of sincere friends including mainly Qatar, it would do such tasks as soon as possible. He also stressed that Turkiye has been very keen to help the Syrian people from the very start of the disaster and offered all the necessary rescue and support efforts to them without any discrimination.
Ambassador Dr Goksu said that the people in the affected areas in both countries are in urgent need for necessities such as blankets, heaters, electricity generators, mobile toilet cabins, and other basic supplies to survive the tough winter conditions as most of them live in the open due to the risk involved in staying in buildings,
The Turkish envoy said with the help of the RACA, the Embassy of Turkiye has managed to maintain three collection points to collect in-kind donations of the people in Qatar and send them to the affected areas. He further stressed the appreciation of the Turkish people for the official and popular Qatari efforts that have always proven that Qatar and its people will remain always reliable friends that hurry to help in the difficult times.
Qatar TV hosted a number of officials from the different participating charitable organisations who talked about the support and rescue efforts on the ground within both Syria and Turkiye and stressed the need for more funds and efforts to help those people in such an extremely tough situation. Similarly, a considerable number of clergymen and Islamic scholars talked about the importance of taking part at such efforts and said that people should do their best to help each other in these disasters. However, Qatar TV stressed that people should only donate through the legal channels approved by the Regulatory Authority for Charitable Activities to avoid falling into legal troubles or the support falling into other than the right targeted hands.
