Micron Announced DDR5 Memory For 4Th Gen AMD EPYC Processors

(MENAFN- ForPressRelease)

Micron Technology, Inc. has officially announced the availability of their DDR5 memory, built specifically for data-intensive environments such as data centers. Micron DDR5 Memory is validated for AMD EPYC series processors. These modern server packs comprise more processing cores in the CPU; however, every core's memory bandwidth has been reportedly decreasing. This memory module minimizes any blockages due to the higher bandwidth, enhanced reliability, and scalability compared to previous generations.

Key Highlights:
.Micron's DDR5 comes with enhanced memory architecture that consists of twice the bandwidth of previous generations, followed by even better efficiency with the increasing core counts.
.It also comes with increased JEDEC speeds ranging up to 4800MT/s2 - 1.5x faster than DDR4
.Can cater to memory-intensive workloads with modules up to 64GB4
.The memory module optimizes the system's performance with DDR5's innovative architecture and on-module power management capabilities.

Whereas, as far as HPC workloads, including computational fluid dynamics (OpenFOAM), Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) modeling, and CP2K molecular dynamics are concerned, the 4th GEN AMD EPYC with Micron DDR5 RAM can usually deliver two times the memory bandwidth as per the STREAM benchmark.

Raj Hazra, senior vice president and general manager of Micron's Compute and Networking Business Unit, further elaborated, 'Micron continues to lead the industry transition to DDR5. Increasingly memory-bound algorithms need far greater memory performance and reliability to extract insights from huge volumes of data. DDR5 provides the next significant advancement in system memory capabilities required to enable these algorithms, thereby continuing to advance the value of next-generation data center infrastructure.'
To further explain the DDR5 performance improvements, Micron has compared the STREAM benchmark performance on one single 4th Gen AMD EPYC processor with Micron DDR5 at the data transmission rate of 4800MT/s which is further compared with 3rd Gen AMD EPYC processor and Micron DDR4 with a data transmission rate of 3200MT/s. Micron revealed that it achieved its peak memory bandwidth of around 378GB/s per socket than 189GB/s with a 3rd Gen AMD EPYC processor system, which means that the system memory bandwidth increases two times the previous generations.

While discussing the performance, Ram Peddibhotla, corporate vice president of EPYC product management, AMD, explains that '4th Gen AMD EPYC processors continue to raise the bar for workload performance in the modern data center while simultaneously delivering exceptional energy efficiency. 4th Gen AMD EPYC processors will transform our customers' data center operations by accelerating time to value, driving the lower total cost of ownership, and helping enterprises to address their sustainability goals.'

Moreover, with its partnership with AMD, Micron evaluated three high-performance computing workloads, i.e., OpenFOAM, WRF, and CP2K on 3rd Gen AMD EPYC processors and Micron DDR4 and 4th Gen AMD EPYC processors with Micron DDR5. The 4th Gen AMD EPYC processor with Micron DDR5 enhances the performance of OpenFOAM by 2.4 times, WRF by 2.1 times, and CP2K by 2.03 times. Furthermore, Micron is the first to offer samples for DDR5 for its customers and plays an essential role in JEDEC's creation of DDR5 memory specifications.

Vice president of HPC & AI, Lenovo Infrastructure Solutions Group, Scott Tease, explained, 'The continued growth of modeling & simulation, and machine learning workloads in HPC and AI means that our customers are demanding memory solutions that maximize effective bandwidth. With these performance-intensive workloads in mind, our collaboration with Micron throughout the development and validation phase allows us to deliver next-generation platforms with a new era in memory performance accelerated by DDR5.'

Additionally, Micron's Technology Enablement Program (TEP) is the first ever to enable system designers to access key internal resources to assist their DDR5 validation and qualification processes.
About Micron:

Micron Technology, Inc. is an American global technology company that operates in the semiconductor industry. The company's main product is dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips, used in computers and other electronic devices for data storage and retrieval. Additionally, Micron manufactures NAND flash memory chips, which are used to store data in 'solid-state' form on portable devices such as cell phones, tablets, music players, digital cameras, and more. Micron also produces other semiconductor components, such as logic integrated circuits (ICs) and analog ICs, for various applications.
