Kosovo halts debatable Serbian license plate system

(MENAFN) Kosovo's prime minister, charged by Brussels of sabotaging discussions to resolve a dispute over a proposal to replace Serbian license plates, announced on Tuesday that the plan had been postponed for two days.

The conflict began after Kosovo stated that ethnic Serbs in the nation would be fined if they did not exchange automobile license plates granted by Serbia for registration numbers issued by Pristina.

The underlying source of conflict is Kosovo's declaration of independence from Serbia in 2008. The latter rejects the plan and has urged Kosovo's Serb minority to be loyal to Belgrade.

Albin Kurti, the Prime Minister of Kosovo, said on Twitter earlier on Tuesday that he has accepted a request from Washington "for a 48-hour postponement of the introduction of fines" for automobiles with Serbian license plates.

The postponement helped to defuse tensions in northern Kosovo, a day after EU-mediated talks between Belgrade and Pristina over the potentially explosive proposal failed to achieve results.
