The amendment of the law comes in view of the development of information crimes and the concealment of their perpetrators through the use of modern applications, as well as some shortcomings in the courts being satisfied with applying the penalty of a fine that did not achieve complete deterrence. .
The amendment also stipulates that it is not permissible to waive if the victim is any of the state agencies or public figures who occupy positions in it.
Meanwhile, opposition circles considers amendments to the Information Crimes Act as a means to protect corruption
Jurist, Ismail Al-Tom launched a strong attack on the amendments approved by the coup cabinet, in the Anti-Cybercrime Law, and said that they were aimed at protecting corruption from criticism.
Last Wednesday, the Cabinet approved amendments to the draft law on combating cybercrime, which included heavy penalties for violators.
One of the amended clauses stipulates that“it is not permissible to waive if the victim is any of the state's agencies or public figures who occupy positions in it.”
In a statement to the Al-Demograty newspaper, Al-Tom explained that the amendments lack legitimacy as a result of not passing through the legislative stages that begin with a draft and end with ratification and signature.
The lawmaker criticized the government regarding the constitution, and said that the step to toughen the punishment, according to the amendments included in the law, for those who criticize institutions and public figures, is an attempt by the authorities to cover up the corruption in the various state institutions, especially since the intensification of penalties does not affect violators.
He described the amendments included in the law as indicating a major legal (degeneration) for the country.
The authorities justified their amendments as a result of the increase of information crimes and the concealment of their perpetrators through the use of modern applications, as well as some shortcomings in the courts being content with applying the penalty of fines that did not achieve complete deterrence.
