Ukraine considers using waste to heat homes

(MENAFN) According to Yury Vitrenko, CEO of national energy giant Naftogaz, Ukraine may start using waste and biomass instead of natural gas for heating as early as next year. The business may construct three combined heating and power plants in Zhitomir that is going to run on wood chips and municipal solid waste, according to the official.

As reported by the Ukrinform news agency, Vitrenko remarked, “Zhytomyr’s experience shows that in most cases it is possible by the next heating season to switch from natural gas in heating generation to biomass, garbage.”

According to Vitrenko, work is presently being done in Zhitomir on a cogeneration power and heating plant that is going to utilize various kinds of fuel. The official claims that starting initiatives like this now would be more beneficial for Naftogaz than purchasing gas.

Vitrenko also mentioned that “we are attracting funds from international partners for this purpose. Such projects are technically and economically feasible and help to make the entire energy sector sustainable in the future. We must realize how important it is to switch from natural gas to biomass, alternative sources, heat pumps as soon as possible, because with the market price on gas the payback period of such projects is 2-3 months.”
