Authorities from the Taliban government claim that a mass grave that was recently found in the southern Afghan province of Kandahar is related to the“atrocities” of General Raziq Achakzai, fallen police chief of Kandahar.
The attention of many human rights organizations has been drawn to the mass grave, which was discovered in the Spin Boldak area of Kandahar, contiguous to Pakistan. They demand a thorough probe into this matter.
The remains of these bodies should not be further“disturbed and destroyed” pending forensic testing, Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Afghanistan stated on Sunday, in a tweet.
The Taliban should collaborate with the UN and other legal organizations concerning the investigation, Patricia Gossman, the Associate Asia Director of Human Rights Watch, said in a conversation with the media.
“Rather than bring the graveyard of empires, Afghanistan is an empire of grave sites,” Gossman wrote in a tweet on Monday.
The discovery of a mass grave in this area was also confirmed by the Taliban government spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, who told the media that it was“the remains of the atrocities of General Raziq.”
General Raqiz Achakzai was one of the border commanders of the republic regime and was also the police chief in Kandahar province. Raziq was killed on October 18, 2018, in an armed attack.
