Italy worries that France may cut off its electricity supplies

(MENAFN) According to a Saturday article in la Repubblica, Italy worries that France may stop exporting electricity due to declining nuclear power factory production.

An Italian energy ministry official confirmed the story that the French energy authorities wrote to their Italian colleagues to inform them of an impending two-year supply stop. Bloomberg, nevertheless, stated on Sunday that France has no plans to reduce its electricity supplies to Italy.

In a statement, the ministry of energy transformation stated, “France reaffirms its commitment to reciprocal solidarity regarding gas and electricity with all our European neighbors. Fully functioning electric interconnections are a priority for collective supply security.”

This Monday, French state-owned energy company EDF announced that maintenance issues at the aging facilities is going to cause its nuclear power output to fall to its lowest level in more than 30 years. In its winter forecast report, the country's grid operator RTE stated that it could need to shut down its interconnectors to Italy and the United Kingdom. Power exports would be essentially halted by such a measure.
