For Arb'aeen, millions of Shia pilgrims travel to Karbala

(MENAFN) Millions of Shia Muslims from numerous nations are descending on the holy city of Karbala in Iraq to observe Arba'een, which falls 40 days after the commemoration of Imam Hussein (AS), the third Shia Imam, being martyred.

Before the actual day of Arba'een, which comes on September 17 this year, tens of thousands of pilgrims from nations including Iran, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia have been arriving in the city, which is situated approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) southwest of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad.

To touch the gilded grille surrounding Imam Hussein's tomb and smuggle messages between the bars, pilgrims journey to the holy city.

“We are nicely managing the arrival and departure of pilgrims,” he highlighted, adding that “Thank God Iranian officials could efficiently handle the increased congestion of pilgrims at border crossings. Currently, the situation is favorable and all pilgrims are crossing into Iraq.”
