Turkey promises to back Ukraine's territorial integrity, privileges of Crimean Tatars

(MENAFN) Türkiye on Monday vowed to carry on its backing for Ukraine's territorial integrity and the privileges of Crimean Tatars.

Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu on Twitter stated that he has gathered with "the leader of the Crimean Tatars Mustafa Abdulcemil Kirimoglu and First Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Emine Dzheppar."

"We will continue to support the territorial integrity of Ukraine and the rights of Crimean Tatars," Cavusoglu went further on.

Russian militaries broke into the Crimean Peninsula in February 8 years ago, with Russian leader Vladimir Putin officially separating the region into two divided federal matters of the Russian Federation the next month.

Crimea's ethnic Tatars have dealt with harassment since Russia's 2014 occupation of the peninsula, a situation Turkey has criticized.

Turkey and the US, in addition to the UN General Assembly, view the takeover as unlawful.

Kirimoglu and Leader of the Crimean Tatar National Assembly Refat Chubarov were blocked from going into the peninsula after the takeover.
