Iran builds third titanium factory in boost to precious metal output

(MENAFN) Iran has opened its third titanium processing facility, giving the recycling of a priceless metal used in high-end aerospace, marine, and automotive industries a substantial boost.

By Iranian experts employing indigenous machinery, the 27,000-tonne production line in Rudab Sabzevar, northeast Iran, was operational in eight months.

In Sabzevar, where the number of titanium mineral processing and chromite concentrate factories has grown recently, the opening will aid in preventing the raw sale of minerals.

In the province of Razavi Khorasan, the city acts as a mining hub, hosting more than 150 metallic and non-metallic mines with deposits of chromite, manganese, limestone, aluminum, and construction stones.

Titanium sponge, which is converted into metal for use in industry, is made from titanium minerals.

According to the US Geological Survey, China is the world's biggest producer of titanium sponge, accounting for 57% of global output at 210,000 tons last year (USGS). Russia ranks in second with over 13% of the market, followed by Japan with nearly 17%. Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Vietnam, and Mozambique are more noteworthy sources.
