Amman, Aug 20 (Petra) -- Jordan came first in the Arab world in the percentage of installed capacity of renewable energy sources, and third in the amount of total energy produced, according to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.
The Kingdom's energy generated from total installed capacity of renewable energy by the end of 2021 topped about 5.5 terawatt-hour in the ratio of installed capacity of renewable energy sources, without calculating hydropower, and came third in the amount of energy produced after Egypt and Morocco, it said in a statement.
The capacity was distributed by 1,498 megawatt from commercial sources under power purchase agreements, 59 percent of the total installed capacity, and 1,027 megawatt from renewable energy systems owned by subscribers, which accounts for about 41 percent of the total installed capacity, it said.
According to a previous statement by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh, the total installed capacity of electric power generation from renewable energy sources was at about 2,526 megawatt at the end of July, about 29 percent of the electric power generated since the beginning of 2022, compared to about 26 percent in 2021, it said.
The ministry's strategy aims to diversify energy sources through expanding the utilization of renewable energy sources and oil shale to generate electricity, as well as developing oil and gas exploration. The number of wind energy companies in the Kingdom is seven and solar energy companies 22.
