The committee report on constitutional reforms has been handed over to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

President's Secretary Gamini Senarath said that the Government will consider the contents of the report and determine the next course of action.

A nine-member committee headed by President's Counsel Romesh de Silva had been appointed in 2020 to formulate proposals for a new Constitution.

The President has commended the committee for their work in drafting the proposals.

The report was handed over at a time there is a push for amendments to the Constitution.

The opposition and independent groups have already proposed abolishing the 20th Amendment and putting forward a 21st Amendment.

The proposals include curtailing the powers of the President. (Colombo Gazette)
