Jordan's solar and wind energy projects to generate electricity reached a total of about 2,400 megawatts in the Kingdom, contributing more than 25% of the generated electrical energy, Kharabsheh pointed out.
This produced energy is almost generated by commercial projects, or through investors and private sector funders, while the contribution of renewable energy did not exceed 1% in 2014, the minister pointed out.
In the field of electrical energy storage, he said Jordan is about to complete a detailed feasibility study for a tender for a water energy storage project on a Jordanian dam with a capacity of about 400 megawatts, as well as use of battery storage.
Regarding the IRENA meeting, Kharabsheh said the meeting is held and world is still suffering for the third year in a row under exceptional circumstances caused by the Covid-19 pandemic that affected all countries worldwide and led to a slowdown in growth in all aspects of economic and social life, including the energy sector.
Despite all these hardships, he added the momentum of the achievements witnessed by the world and the Arab region in the field of renewable energy and rationalization of energy consumption is 'reassuring,' especially with the focus on diversifying useable resources and technologies, and implementing large-scale commercial projects with 'high' investments in cooperation between the public and private sectors and investment agencies in this area.
Lauding Jordanian government's current cooperation with IRENA, he said the Kingdom, as a founding and permanent member of IRENA, is looking forward to continued cooperation among member states.
Jordan, he noted, will continue its efforts to participate and support all the initiatives and programs prepared by IRENA to enhance opportunities for balanced cooperation between member states.
