Ambassador of Italy H E Alessandro Prunas has said that the positive trend in the bilateral relations between Italy and Qatar has maintained a level of excellence throughout the recent years, noting that excellent status of Italy-Qatar relations has also demonstrated its factual dimension in this summer's Afghanistan crisis, in which Qatar demonstrated to be a key and a reliable partner.
Speaking to Qatar News Agency (QNA) to mark Qatar National Day, he said that Italian security forces regularly conduct joint trainings and exchanges, which have increased in view of the 2022 World Cup. He noted that next year will not just be the year of an historic and unforgettable FIFA World Cup, but also a remarkable year for Qatari-Italian relations.
On the economy, the Ambassador said that COVID-19 has caused a severe negative impact on the global economy. He cited the interruption of international supply chains, drops in employment and development as some of the immediate effects of the pandemic. He expressed his belief that both Italy and Qatar have both reacted promptly with successful economic and medical strategies, such as heavy public investment in innovation and sustainable development or, most importantly, a strong trust in science to boost their respective vaccination campaigns. He highlighted that these efforts resulted in Italy becoming the top country in Europe in terms of GDP growth, with Qatar's GDP also forecast to grow by 4.50 percent in 2022.
On World Cup 2022, He said that Qatar's preparations to host the event are unprecedented in history; not only the tournament is taking place for the first time ever in the Middle East and Arab World, but it is also the first World Cup to be entirely played in an interconnected metropolitan area. He said that Qatar has developed a first class hospitality capacity along with extremely efficient infrastructures and beautiful stadia, to make this possible.
He added that Italians are proud with the contribution they made in these efforts, through a number of Italian companies which worked on projects like the Doha Metro and to the Al Bayt Stadium, which was built by a joint venture between Italian and Qatari companies.
“Al Bayt is indeed the most iconic stadium of the tournament, taking the shape of a traditional tent, and the public has already admired its beauty during the FIFA Arab Cup. I have no doubt that the forthcoming year will unfold many other opportunities for cooperation and Italy is ready to play its part for the success of the FIFA World Cup,” he said.
The Ambassador congratulated Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and the Qatari people on the advent of the event, as well as on hosting the first-ever Shura elections.
