The exhibition features a collection of pictures of Egypt, dating back to the 19th century, owned by the Brazilian emperor Pedro II, who reigned in Brazil from 1831 to 1889 and was the first head of state of the Americas to visit Egypt. Dom Pedro carried out two missions, in 1871 and 1876.

The exhibition, which coincides with the 150th anniversary of the Brazilian emperor's first trip to Egypt, will be open for visitation from November 3 to 30, at the Gezira Art Center, in Zamalek.

“Emperor Dom Pedro II loved to travel and collect photographs. He always showed his love for Egypt, which justifies being the first head of a country in the Americas to visit the Arab country twice. During his trips, he collected over 500 photos of Egypt. These images are an integral part of a collection of more than 20,000, maintained by the Brazilian National Library Foundation, located in Rio de Janeiro, and chosen by UNESCO to be included in the list of the Memory of the World Register Program,” Patriota revealed.

The exhibition will be open until November 30

“During his travels through Egypt, from Alexandria to Abu Simbel, later heading to Wadi Halfa (now Sudan), the Brazilian emperor reported in his diaries everything he experienced. Recently recognized by UNESCO, these journals will be part of the exhibition,” said the ambassador. UNESCO is the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization.

“This exhibition is a fascinating artistic presentation from the perspective of its invaluable content, including 92 pictures of historic landmarks, buildings, mosques, Pompey's Pillar in Alexandria, the Nile, among other archaeological sites, as well as 11 information panels describing both visits by the emperor to Egypt,” said the head of the Plastic Arts department at the Egyptian Ministry of Culture, Khaled Sorour, at the opening of the exhibition.

“These photos were captured by distinguished photographers from France and Brazil, such as Antonio Beto and Pascal Seba, and describe Egypt's political, social, and economic life in the years 1871 and 1876, representing an opportunity for researchers, students, and historians,” concluded Souror.

The book by Brazilian researcher Roberto Khatlab,“The travels of Pedro II: Middle East and North Africa, 1871 and 1876 [As viagens de D. Pedro II: Oriente Médio e África do Norte, 1871 e 1876]” was a reference for the creation of the exhibition. Khatlab lives in Lebanon and is the author of several books published on history, religion, Brazil-Middle East relations, and immigration.
