Qatar secure spot at 2022 World Championship

Doha: Qatar national men's volleyball team yesterday booked a place in next year's World Championship in Russia, following a fine run at the Asian Volleyball Championships in Japan recently.

Al Annabi after finishing fifth in Japan climbed to 20th spot in the World volleyball rankings. 

Qatar have secured one of the 12 automatic spots allocated for teams based on their world ranking for next year's event, which will take place in 10 cities in four different time zones across Russia.

Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) President Sheikh H E Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani yesterday congratulated the team after they secured a place in the World Championship. 

“We congratulate everyone for the qualification of our national men's volleyball team to the World Championships to be held in Russia in 2022. Thank you to the Qatar Volleyball Federation and the heroes of our team, the technical and administrative staff,” the QOC President posted on Twitter yesterday.

In Japan, Al Annabi had beaten India (3-0) and Bahrain (3-0) while losing against eventual runners-up Japan and bronze winners China prior Sunday's playoff round match in which they outclassed former Asian champions Australia with a straight set win.

Iran, who succeeded in defending their Asian title, also  secured their berth in the World Championship along with runners-up Japan.

Apart from the hosts, Russian Volleyball Federation, and the defending world champions Poland, continental champions, runners-up and 12 world ranking spots make up the 24 teams, who will take part in the event to be played from August 26 to September 11 next year.
