Liza-Mare Syron is a director, actor, teacher, dramaturge and award winning academic. A descendent from the Birripi people of the mid-north coast NSW.
Her work history includes; Senior Scientia Lecturer UNSW (2020-present), Indigenous Research Strategy Coordinator Walanga Muru Macquarie University (2017-2019), Senior Aboriginal Cultural Development Officer Arts NSW (2011-2013), and Head of Theatre Performance at the Eora College for Aboriginal Studies, Centre for Visual and Performing Arts in Redfern (2000-2010).
She is a founding member of Moogahlin Performing Arts and is currently a Senior Artistic Associate. Her latest professional directing role was for the new Aboriginal play The Weekend (Henrietta Baird), which premiered at the Sydney Festival 2019. Other directorial credits include Rainbows End (Jane Harrison) at Darlinghurst theatre, The Fox and The Freedom Fighters (Rhonda Dixon Grovenor and Naedena Dixon with Alana Valentine) Carriageworks Redfern 2015, assist on Wynanboga Yuringa Carriageworks 2017, and workshop director Yellamundie national first people's playwriting festival 2015, 2017. Liza-Mare also lectures at NIDA and has worked as a dramaturge on NIDA student productions.
Liza-Mare is widely published in the areas of actor training; Indigenous theatre practice; inter-cultural performance; and theatre and community development. Liza-Mare has received the following awards; the Marlis Thiersch Prize for excellence in English-language articles in the broad field of drama, theatre and performance studies the Australasian Association for Theatre, Drama and Performance Studies ADSA (2010), the Phillip Parsons Prize, for Performance as Research ADSA (2005), and a Rob Jordon award citation ADSA (2013) for her contributing chapter, 'Afterword: Contemporary Indigenous theatre and performance practice in Australia: cultural integrity and historical significance' in Maryrose Casey's Telling Stories: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Performance 2012.
