PESHAWAR: Most of girls students in Alizai area of Kohat leave education due to lack of any degree college for girls in the area.

Isar Ali, a social activist, said while talking to TNN that girls in the area want to get higher education, but most of them sit at home after passing intermediate exams as there is no degree college for girls in the area. He said most of people in Alizai have weak financial background and they cannot afford to send their girls to other cities for education.

Isar Ali said Union Council Ustarzai is situated at a distance of just one kilometre from Alizai where the government of Awami National Party (ANP) had approved establishment of a girls degree college in 2013. He said 80 percent work on the college was completed at that time, but then the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) came into power and did not release funds for the remaining work. He said work on the college cannot be completed eight years after its start as the project has become a victim of politics.

The social activist said girls colleges are available in Kohat city, which is situated at a distance of about 20 kilometres from Alizai, but such is the weak condition of people that they even cannot afford to pay fare of transportation. People of the area have called upon the provincial government to release funds for the Ustarzai College without further delay to resolve this long standing problem and save the future of thousands of talented girls.

Education Officer, Haziqur Rehman, when contacted, refused to give any opinion, saying that it is a question for the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to answer.

The Construction and Works (C & W) Department Engineer Shaukat told TNN that a fund of Rs200 million was initially approved for the Ustarzai College. He said the funds have already been spent and more funds are needed for completion of construction work.

Jehanzeb, a member of local Youth Welfare Organisation, said he is making efforts with the help of Umar Asghar Foundation for release of funds for the college. He said Rs30 million additional funds were released for the college recently, but now the work has stopped again due to coronavirus. He was confident that work on the college will resume soon after end to coronavirus lockdown.
