(MENAFN- Bangladesh Monitor) Dhaka : The second Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 will join Biman fleet on December 1.
"The second Boeing 787-8, known as the Dreamliner, will land at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the city at 4:30 pm on December 1 totaling the number of aircrafts in the Biman Bangladesh Airlines, the national flag carrier, to 15," said a Biman press release.
The Boeing Company has handed over ownership of the brand new aircraft to Biman on November 29 while the BG-2112 flight will arrive in the city after making an uninterrupted 15:30 hours' journey from Penfield Airport in Seattle, USA, said Shakil Meraj, General Manager, Public Relations, Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
Earlier, the first Dreamliner Boeing 787-8, known as Aakashbeena, arrived in on August 19. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina named the four new aircrafts Aakashbeena, Hansabalaka, Gangchil, and Rajhansa, he added.
Under a purchase agreement of US$2.1 billion for 10 planes signed in 2008, Biman received delivery of four 777-300ER and two 737-800 from Boeing. The remaining two more 787 Dreamliner are now awaiting delivery.
The first Dreamliner aircraft has started its journey in Dhaka-Kuala Lumpur and Dhaka-Singapore routes from early September.
The second Dreamliner is slated to operate flights from to London, Dammam and Bangkok routes. The Dreamliner will operate six flights on Dhaka-London route, four on Dhaka-Dammam route and three on Dhaka-Bangkok route in a week from December 10, said AM Mosaddique Ahmed, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Biman.
Biman in recent schedule update filed planned Dreamliner service to London Heathrow, currently displaying from 10DEC18 to 15FEB19. Overall frequency will also increase from four to six weekly, with additional two weekly Dhaka-London Heathrow, in addition to existing 4 weekly Dhaka-London Heathrow-Sylhet-routing.
The airline's Managing Director and CEO said that the new aircraft will enable Biman to remain competitive.
Shakil said the 787 Dreamliner is Boeing's most fuel-efficient aircraft and it is environment-friendly as it consumes about 20 per cent less fuel compared to other aircraft.
The Dreamliner-manufactured by the aviation giant Boeing under the production name Boeing 787-8 - comes with state-of-the-art technology that only some top airlines could add to their fleets as yet.
The aircraft features 271 seats across a two-class configuration, offering 24 seats in Business and 247 seats in Economy Class.
Each seat comes fitted with Panasonic's ex2 IFE, which features nine TV channels, more than 100 movies, and also video games. Passengers will also be able to live stream nine channels, including the BBC and CNN.
Roaming on mobiles will also be available due to the carrier having contracts with 25 satellites around the world.
With the introduction of the 787, Biman Bangladesh now boasts a fleet of 11 aircraft, which includes four 737-800s, four 777-300ERs, and two Bombardier Q400s.
