Sri Lanka- Tensions flare as Speaker enters chambers with heavy police protection
(MENAFN- Colombo Gazette) Speaker Karu Jayasuriya entered the Parliament chambers with heavy police protection today.
The Speaker was forced to enter from the side door as Government Parliamentarians were protesting near the Speaker's chair and also occupied his chair.
The Parliament mace was escorted with the Speaker and he sat on a side as his seat was being occupied by the protesting Government Parliamentarians.
The Speaker then began Parliament proceedings resulting in angry Government MPs throwing books and other items towards the police and the Speaker.
Parliament property was also damaged during the incident. (Colombo Gazette)
