Turkey hopes US sanctions will be lifted soon

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ANKARA, Oct 22 (KUNA) -- Turkey hopes US sanctions will be lifted soon, Presidential Spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said on Monday.
In a press conference held after the Council of Ministers' meeting, Kalin said that lifting of US sanctions would be a positive step as the two countries were in a transitional period of re-normalizing relations.
US President Donald Trump thanked Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during a phone conversation on Sunday on the agreement on the Idlib governorate in Syria last September, pointed out Kalin.
He added that Turkish-US joint patrols in northern Syrian city of Manbij were about to start.
Relations between Washington and Ankara suffered a setback after US sanctions imposed early August targeting the Ministers of Justice and Interior of Turkey in response to continued American pastor Andrew Brunson's detention on terrorism-related charges. Brunson was released on 12th October.
The US President announced in August that taxes will be increased to 20 percent on aluminum and 50 percent on steel imported from Turkey.
"Sanctions imposed on Turkey were linked directly to the American pastor, and there is logic to remove these sanctions, but a final decision is yet to be made," said US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo Wednesday. (end) rs.aq
