Baghdad, Irbil declare understandings on airport, borders administration
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) IRBIL, Jan 15 (KUNA) -- Iraq and the Kurds have reached "understandings" on airports, borders, dams and several other pending matters, they announced after joint talks here on Tuesday.
The meeting came amid a comprehensive revision of pending issues between the central Baghdad and northern Kurdistan region governments, read an official joint press statement.
The talks between experts from both sides included five bilateral dimensions, highlighting the matters of security, borders, airports, customs, border crossings, dams and oil, added the statement.
The discussions were held amid an "air of trust and understanding," the statement emphasised, which Kurdish interior minister Karim Sinjari later described in a press conference as "successful" and leading to "good decisions." Kurdish officials, however, said that a date was not yet set regarding the opening of airports Baghdad had suspended after the region's referendum resulted in a self-declared independence.
Baghdad had carried out several counter-measures in response to the referendum, including the closure of airports and seizure of disputed areas, including the oil-rich Kirkuk and Nineveh provinces. (end) sbr.sd
