Qatar voices concern over Iraqi Kurdistan referendum

Doha: Qatar voiced deep concerns over the referendum held in the Iraqi Kurdistan region, which would pose a threat to the unity of Iraq and the security and stability of the region.

An official source at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday that the referendum, which took place in the Iraqi Kurdistan region without consensus between the central government in Iraq and the Iraqi Kurdistan region, should not lead to further negative repercussions and exacerbate the division between the Iraqi people, at a time when focus must be on achieving security, stability and unity of Iraq and the elimination of terrorism.

The source underlined Qatar's firm position affirming the importance and necessity of preserving Iraq's unity and territorial integrity, and that the threat of this unity would pose a threat to the region as a whole.

The source reiterated Qatar's call upon the two parties to engage in constructive dialogue and to address all issues of disagreement so as to preserve Iraq's unity and achieve security and stability in the region.
