China's 'Facekini' Fuels Burkini Debate

(MENAFN- Morocco World News) A 'facekini' is a full-face mask, which reveals only the eyes, nose and mouth. It was designed to protect beachgoers from tanning, UV rays and other irritants.

The facekini is popular in China where women are very keen on maintaining fair skin. 'Otherwise people will think you're a peasant,' explains a 58 years old Chinese woman to the Times.

While some Chinese women only wear the mask, others include a body suit similar to the burkini. This fashion trend was used to criticize and mock the banning of the burkini.

Last Wednesday, the official Communist Party newspaper, the Weibo microblog account of People's Daily, commented on the French ban in response to western countries criticizing China over its controversial human rights. 'Armed police in France forced a Muslim woman to take off her conservative swimsuit,' stated the post, 'Where are their human rights?'

People on social media also wondered about the reaction of French authorities regarding the facekini. One twitter user posted in French, 'what will we say to the Chinese tourist s when they will use their mask so they wouldn't tan?' according to the New York Times.

Last week, the French State Council overturned the burkini ban in one city, but some French cities are still maintaining the ban.
