QRCS to implement new medical projects in Gaza

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MOH) to implement a series of new medical projects in several public hospitals of Gaza, with a total budget of QR2,909,740 ($800,000).

The agreement was signed by QRCS Secretary-General Saleh bin Ali al-Mohannadi and MOH's Director-General for International Operation Dr Ashraf Abo Mahadi.

The purpose of the 12-month project is to provide quality health services for the patients of Gaza.

Under the agreement, QRCS office in Gaza will establish a new joint replacement unit in the Al-Shefaa medical Complex, at a cost of $600,000. This involves medical staff training and remuneration, delegation of an orthopedic consultant, procurement of general and specialist surgical equipment, and supply of joint replacement prostheses for one year.

The project will help improve the advanced orthopedic surgical services in the complex, minimise the need for patient referrals abroad, reduce the rate of permanent disabilities resulting from orthopedic injuries, and receive hundreds of patients and elderly people per year.

Another part of the project is to enhance the gastroscopy services at two Gaza hospitals, by procuring a gastroscope, colonoscope, and duodenoscope for Nasser Hospital and medical consumables for gastroscopy at Nasser Hospital and European Gaza Hospital.

These provisions will cost $200,000, benefiting about 15,000 patients with gastrointestinal problems per year who visit surgical and internal medicine departments of the two hospitals and nearby health facilities. Indirect beneficiaries include 100 medical interns of the hospital and 60 Palestinian Board internal medicine doctors and surgeons.

In return, MOH will assess the needs, determine the specifications and estimated costs, make quantity lists, conduct and award tenders, develop training plans, select the training provider and trainees, in co-ordination with QRCS.

MOH will also secure licensing from competent authorities, remove any inconveniences, and facilitate the work of QRCS execution and follow-up committees.

Commenting on these projects, al-Mohannadi said, "This endeavour is in response to the urgent needs at Gaza public hospitals to introduce and improve surgical and diagnostic services, enhancing the performance and reducing patient referrals abroad."

Al-Mohannadi stressed the importance of supporting Gaza hospitals, which are inadequately equipped and staffed. "These projects are in line with the Health Sector Strategic Goals 2013-2017 adopted by different Palestinian healthcare providers and decision makers," he said.
