Beware of 'suspicious' donations for Syrians


(MENAFN- Arab News) JEDDAH: The Interior Ministry has warned those who would exploit the Syrian case to collect donations either professionally or by placing ads for bank accounts zakat or any other means. It said that it will penalize those in violation.
Through its Twitter account the ministry called on people not to respond to such suspicious calls to collect such money. It reiterated such calls are suspicious and fraudulent.
The Interior Ministry recommended that those who want to make zakat or donations should give directly to those in need or through licensed parties in the Kingdom.
The ministry stated the Kingdom is already contributing about SR1 billion in humanitarian aid to the Syrians and Somalis through 176 welfare programs and projects. It said there is much focus on the Syrian brothers through the national campaign to support the people of Syria.
It reiterated that anyone implicated in collecting money in a non-legitimate way will be charged under the law and any non-Saudi involved in such activity will be deported.
The Interior Ministry through its Financial Investigation Administration (FIA) received 118 complaints in 2013 related to terror financing and 29 of these were proven to be valid after investigation.
With regards to money laundering FIA received 2039 complaints of which 192 proved valid.
