Some 39 people killed in Sudan's floods
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The heavy rain and floods in Sudan have killed 39 people, damaged up to 5,000 houses and submerged hundreds of acres, the government said on Tuesday.
Most of the country was affected by the heavy rain, which exceeded level record at this time of year, causing loss of lives and property, Interior Minister Esmat Abdul-Rahman said in a report at a government extraordinary meeting.
According to the report, 3,077 houses were damaged in the state of Khartoum, 1,008 in River Nile, 409 in Kasla, 300 in North Kordovan, and 388 in the White Nile. Among the 39 victims of the floods, 17 are in Khartoum.
For his part, the Minister of Water Resources and Electricity Moataz Moussa, said that water levels rose in all rivers.
During the last monsoon season, the Sudan experienced the worst floods in a quarter of a century, killing 50 people in Khartoum and the UN estimated other 180,000 were affected.
