Fans in frenzy as World Cup final nears
(MENAFN- Arab News) Excitement is mounting here as the final in this year's World Cup takes place on Sunday night between Germany and Argentina in Rio de Janeiro Brazil.
Thousands of Saudi fans of Brazil who were disappointed by their team's humiliating 7-1 loss to Germany on Tuesday are likely to be in better spirits to watch the last two games of the tournament. The event only comes around again in four years time in Russia.
Brazil will have a chance to make some amends for their loss by winning against the Netherlands in the third place playoff on Saturday at 11 p.m. Saudi time. Then on Sunday with the pomp and ceremony starting at 10 p.m. the big game takes place between Argentina and Germany.
The knockout stage of the tournament thrilled Saudi fans this Ramadan. Many watched the games at sites with huge television screens set up by the municipality at malls and prominent places.
The stunning Brazil defeat saw traffic jams on Tuesday on some city roads when motorists stopped to watch the game.
'I first thought it was an accident because I didn't see any damaged vehicles. Then I thought it was a brawl but it turned out to be a mass gathering of football lovers including motorists on Al-Rowdah Street near Bicycle Square" Mohammed A. Zahrani who lives in the Khalidiya district said.
'When I spotted the television screen I realized it was the crucial match between Brazil and Germany. I was shocked just like everyone else when Brazil lost" he said.
'It was difficult to drive in Kilo 5 in south Jeddah because motorists were watching the match" said Abdul Raheem Bawazeer a Yemeni national who lives in south Jeddah.
'I go every night to Al-Wafa hotel in Bani Malik to watch the matches and then also have suhoor there" said Ali Abu Rasen a Saudi living in the area.
'Whenever there is a late-night football match or World Cup game local football fans stay awake to catch the live action but since it coincides with Ramadan we have not felt any difference in sales" said Mohamed Saleem Kutty a salesman at a leading 24-hour supermarket in east Jeddah.
